CEUT offers four types of funding possibilities to meet the varying needs and challenges that faculty members may encounter in completing a project. Generally these challenges fall in two categories—the need for time, and the need to purchase things, such as materials, supplies, and additional help that may be obtained on an hourly basis.
So, when people ask us, “what type of grant should I apply for,” the answer is generally the same – “tell us what you need to make the project a success.”
Teaching-Learning Grants
Teaching-Learning Grants provide basic operating funds that can be used to purchase project related materials, student wages, and even equipment needs that may be modest in nature. The level of funding can vary, based on need, from $500 to $4,000, with the average grant being in the $2,000 range.
Mini-Grants
Mini-Grants also provide basic operating funds, but are limited to a maximum of $500. The purpose of these grants is to provide a relatively quick response at any time of the year, and the application process is streamlined to a simple one-page form.
Teaching-Release Grants
Teaching-Release Grants provide funds to pay for a one-course release in either the fall or spring semester. Being released from a course responsibility provides additional time that may not otherwise be available to complete a project.
The cost of these grants typically varies by discipline and course level. These grants are designed to support up to the “going rate” that may be paid to an instructor or adjunct professor to teach a single course. Department heads will be able to advise on these costs. Please understand that higher cost courses may require some cost sharing.
The recipient’s department is responsible for employing a replacement instructor or for making appropriate internal arrangements to ensure that the teaching responsibilities being “bought out” are met.
Summer Faculty Fellow Grants
Summer Faculty Fellow Grants will provide salary funds that will pay up to the equivalent salary for teaching one 3-credit hour class. These funds essentially buy faculty time during either summer session to work on an instructional enhancement project. For a number of years the per course cap for summer teaching was set at $6093. CEUT will maintain this cap for summer grants even though the current cap has risen to a level significantly higher. CEUT may also offer partial funding in the case of smaller projects or when there are only limited grant funds remaining in a given year.
The recipient’s department is responsible for handling the summer appointment and ensuring that payments are made in the designated summer session. Department heads and fiscal personnel can advise on these procedures.
